Importance of Yoga – An Integral Part of A Healthy Life

Importance of doing yoga

The word “yoga” means the union. The essence of yoga is the final union of the “Atma” or soul with the “Parmatma” or the divine consciousness. According to ancient scriptures, the knowledge of Yoga originated with the creation itself. However, Lord Shiva is supposed to be the first one who meditated to reach the divine consciousness. He is called the father of yoga or Adiyogi (The original yogi).  Sage Patanjali later classified yoga into eight parts, making it easier to understand and implement for a common man. The eight parts are – Yama, Niyam, Asana, Pranayam, Pratyahara, and Samadhi. Asana and pranayama are actually, just two parts of the entire yoga regimen that are popularised as the importance of yoga. These two parts help to make body sturdy; to ensure a long and healthy life for unhindered spiritual exploration.

However, in case of a normal human being, the route to realization of the divine consciousness starts with the union or harmony between a primary level of existence – the mind and the body.

With an unhealthy body, one cannot productively focus on self-realisation, which is the final aim of the human life. Therefore, yoga starts with the natural normalisation of the body physiology. With yoga, the body finds harmony and balance in all its systems. Yoga has proven to have tremendous improvement in the overall health. It is also beneficial in almost all kinds of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid etc.
