Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana

The Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana or the revolved half moon pose is a standing yoga pose which is done with a much needed and balance and the ability of body to twist. It is pronounced as (PAHR-ee-VREE-tah ARD-uh chan-DRAHS-uh-nuh) and is a combination of four Sanskrit words. The word “Parivrtta” means revolving, the word “Ardha” means half, the word “Chandra” means moon and the word “asana” means a yoga posture.


This yoga posture represents a situation between fullness and emptiness of moon. As a pose which is done on balancing one leg, this pose requires a full control of energy in the body so that staying grounded is easy. It is taught briefly in the 500 Hour yoga Teacher Training course . As the twist deepens, a stream of energy flows through the upper body. Learning and then perfecting this asana will require patience and strength. Once you gain mastery in performing this asana then you will find this yoga asana restorative and rejuvenating. This posture is extremely dynamic and energising.

Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana

Step by step instructions to perform Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana Asana are:

  1. Start by getting into the Triangle pose. Place your right foot in the forward direction and extend your left arms towards the ceiling.
  2. Now lower your left hand while resting it on your upper buttock. Turn your head to look downwards in the direction of the floor. Place the fingertips of your right hand in the front direction of your right foot. Press your right hand and your right foot firmly on the ground.
  3. Lift up your left side leg while straightening your right leg. Now bring your left leg in the parallel direction to the floor. Your top hip should be on your bottom hip and your torso should be in the left direction. Gently extend your left arms and reach your fingertips in the direction of the sky while gazing at your left thumb.
  4. Fix your gaze on the floor again now and lower your left buttock to put it in line with the right buttock. Both of your buttocks should be facing the floor now and your back should be flat. Place your left foot toes in the direction of the floor.
  5. Now bring your right hand on your right buttock. Your hips should be realigned in a way that they are parallel to the floor.
  6. Lift your left leg slowly and strongly to make sure that toes of your right foot and your right knee are on the top of your mat.
  7. Straighten your spine from the tailbone.
  8. Turn your torso in the right direction while twisting your spine.
  9. Reach for right arm towards the ceiling and turn your head to gaze at your right thumb.
  10. Stay in this pose for five to ten breaths and release gently while bringing your right hand in the direction of the floor. Come back into the triangle pose and release while breathing slowly. Repeat the above given steps for the other side.

Precautions While Performing Revolved Half Moon (Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana)

  1. Anyone who has low blood pressure should not practice this asana.
  2. If someone has problems like insomnia and headaches then it is not advised to do this pose.
  3. If someone has neck injury then turning to face the top hand should not be done. Instead, look in a straight direction.
  4. Don’t push through your limits. This asana will take time to perfect. It is best to go slow.
